Introduction / History

The Bonerif people live in Papua Province, Indonesia, primarily in Sarmi Regency along the north coast near the Tor River. They speak the Bonerif language, a Papuan tongue belonging to the Orya–Tor family, closely related to Berik. Historically, the Bonerif have lived in small, isolated communities in the dense forests of northern Papua. Their culture developed independently for centuries, shaped by the rugged terrain and river systems that connect their villages. Contact with outsiders has been minimal, and traditional ways of life remain strong.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Bonerif families typically live in simple homes made from local materials such as wood and palm leaves. Their economy is based on subsistence farming, hunting, and fishing. Gardens provide staple foods like sweet potatoes, taro, and bananas, while rivers supply fish. Hunting wild game supplements their diet. Social life revolves around family and clan relationships, and decisions are often made collectively. Recreational activities include storytelling, traditional dances, and music, which help preserve their cultural identity. Modern conveniences are rare, and access to healthcare and education is extremely limited.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Bonerif people identify primarily with Christianity, but their understanding of biblical faith is often mixed with traditional animistic practices. While many claim to be Christian, there is little evidence of deep discipleship or strong local churches. Spiritual renewal and clear teaching from God's Word are greatly needed. Traditional beliefs in spirits and ancestral powers still influence daily life, creating a worldview that blends old customs with nominal Christianity.

What Are Their Needs?

The Bonerif face significant physical and spiritual challenges. Healthcare and education are scarce, and many villages are difficult to reach due to rugged terrain. Economic opportunities are limited, leaving families dependent on subsistence living. Spiritually, there is a need for mature believers who can teach and model biblical truth. Discipleship resources in their language and culturally sensitive outreach would help strengthen faith and break the hold of syncretism.
